M C Mary Kom – the Most Valuable Player of Indian Asian Games Campaign

mary komAsian Games Gold medalist Mary Kom was entitled as the Most Valuable Player of Asiad campaign at the boasting ceremony sponsored by Samsung India for the Indian Asian Games medal winners, on Monday.  Mary Kom, who holds the tag of the only Indian woman boxer yet to win “gold” in Asian Games for the flyweight class, was awarded the title after a poll.

The contest included all the 11 team/individual gold winners and the men’s hockey team. But none of the members of the men’s hockey team could turn up for the felicitation event due to some prior engagements.
About the event

The Felicitation event was organized by the Indian Olympic Association represented by Mr. Anil Khanna, the treasurer of the association. The gold winners namely- pistol shooter Jitu Rai, Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, discus thrower Seema Punia, relay runner M R Poovamma  also turned up for the event.

In her speck the gold medal winner-Mary Kom told the audience that number of people doubted whether she would be able to “the  yellow medal “in the Asian Games after having three children. But she proved that she is capable enough to stand with her top form in this situation too.

The five-time world champion further adding to her speech said that the society bears a mindset that after becoming a mother; a woman can no way achieve success in athletics. But she had been lucky enough that she has been successful in discarding any such theory. She further added after winning a medal in 2010 Games in Guangzhou in women’s boxing, retouring now with a gold and turning out to be the first Indian Woman boxer with the yellow medal in the Asiad is a proud thing for her.

Furthermore, the Asiad Gold medalist Yogeshwar in his speech said that the nation should target at winning more and more gold medals in the Asian Games instead of the lone “yellow metal’. He further said that he won a gold medal after a long wait of 28 years. And winning just handful of gold medals in Asian Games is not enough to keep the nation’s glory up-risen. Indian’s should target at winning more and more gold medals in each edition so that the wait for “a gold” is not so long.

Yogeshwar in addition to his speech said that he hasn’t won a gold medal in any World Championships. He is determined to win a yellow medal in the Olympics next year. As that is the ultimate dream of every athlete.

The felicitation ceremony was a success in honoring the star athletes of India. Such ceremonies are a boost for the athletes, so that they can perform even better next time.
